DOUG HAALAND & ANTHONY COBB- Running Faster: Redesigning a Transformative Appliance-Technology Company

Product leadership (innovation) is imperative to maintain competitive advantage among aggressive global competitors. A global strategy for product leadership is to advance technology to “Win the Digital Consumer Journey.” With 107 years of expertise as a manufacturing company, transforming to compete in the technology (digital) marketplace is not optional. Workshop participants will learn the history of Whirlpool as an innovation leader in the appliance marketplace, the contemporary challenges requiring the business to move faster, and engage in discussion about design options to increase speed and agility in the marketplace. Presented as a case study, participants can expect to share ideas/insights, practices, and recommendations for Whirlpool’s journey to remain innovative.

Doug Haaland, Ph.D., is the Senior Director of HR Strategy and Planning for Whirlpool Corporation.  In this role, he has global responsibility for HR strategy and business planning, talent management, and capability-building for the HR function, talent analytics and reporting, HR governance, and Organization Effectiveness practice.  He joined Whirlpool in 2016.  Prior to joining Whirlpool, Doug held senior talent management and organization development roles at Eaton and Nike.  Earlier in his career, he provided talent management consulting and program management services to global clients as a Senior Consultant at Development Dimensions International (DDI).  Doug received his Ph.D. and M.A. degrees in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Central Michigan University, and a B.A. in Psychology from St. Olaf College.

Anthony Cobb is the Director of Global Organization Effectiveness for Whirlpool Corporation. In this role, he has responsibility for leading the global practice to drive organization analysis and design, change management, and other enterprise solutions to optimize business performance. Anthony joined Whirlpool in 2015-supporting supply chain, manufacturing, and quality for the North American Region (NAR). Prior to joining Whirlpool, Anthony held organization development roles at Harley-Davidson Inc., Kohler Co., and in corporate healthcare. Earlier in his career, he spent time in a boutique consultancy practicing organization effectiveness to develop non-profit organizations and held leadership roles in non-profit organizations throughout Milwaukee, WI. Anthony is working to complete his Ph.D in Education and Leadership from Cardinal Stritch University (CSU) Milwaukee-with the dissertation focus on Organizational Learning and Innovation. He holds a Master of Science (in Business) degree from CSU and a B.A. in Political Science-Prelaw from Michigan State University.
